Project Case | SGR’s planetary speed increasers successfully commissioned at a Hydropower Plant in Singapore

Date: 2026-04-09

Recently, the planetary speed increaser, independently developed and manufactured by SGR,was successfully deployed at a hydroelectric power plant in Singapore. By stepping up the low-speed rotational power output from the water turbine to the high speeds required by the generator, the unit stably drives the generating set to produce electricity.

This milestone marks SGR’s official entry into the core application sectors of the international clean energy industry with its high-end transmission equipment.

Planetary Speed Increaser Efficiently Drives Water Turbine

Unlike the widely known planetary reducer—which converts the high-speed, relatively low-torque input power supplied by a motor into a low-speed, high-torque output—the planetary speed increaser is designed in the exact opposite manner, utilizing an internal planetary gear train to transform low-speed, high-torque power into a high-speed, low-torque output.

In various small-to-medium-scale hydroelectric power stations, tidal power stations, and low-head run-of-river plants, the energy of the water flow is limited and its velocity is very low.Consequently, the rotational speed of the water turbine is also very low, rendering it unable to meet the operating speed requirements of the generator.

The SGR planetary speed increaser is driven by a water turbine acting upon its low-speed input shaft, utilizing an internal planetary gear transmission system, it converts low-speed, high-torque power into a high-speed output, thereby driving the generator to operate efficiently and enabling the stable conversion of hydropower into electrical energy.

SGR Planetary Speed Increasers Have Outstanding Advantages

Much like its flagship product—the planetary gear reducer—which embodies a comprehensive array of advantages, the "planetary speed increaser" developed and manufactured by SGR boasts a series of distinct merits, standing out as a unique offering within the gearbox market.

  • High Transmission Efficiency: The transmission efficiency of the planetary speed increaser can exceed 97%, thereby maximizing the efficiency of hydropower conversion.
  • Coaxial Input/Output Design: The planetary speed increaser features a coaxial input/output design, offering a compact structure that facilitates seamless integration with turbine-generator sets, making it ideal for deployment in small to medium-sized hydropower stations.
  • Low Vibration and Noise: Utilizing a multi-tooth simultaneous meshing mechanism combined with high-precision gear grinding technology, the planetary speed increaser ensures smooth operation with low noise levels, making it suitable for use in urban or ecologically sensitive areas.
  • Modular Design for Easy Integration: The planetary speed increaser can be configured as a single-stage or multi-stage unit, allowing it to be tailored to meet the specific drive requirements of hydropower stations in diverse operational environments.

Multiple Products Were Successfully Exported

The successful operation and power generation of SGR planetary speed increasers at a hydroelectric power plant in Singapore has achieved significant results. Not only has it effectively boosted the plant's hydroelectric power output, but it has also laid a solid foundation for the global market expansion of SGR’s product line, further underscoring the SGR brand's core competitiveness within the international arena.

With over a decade of deep expertise in the mechanical transmission industry, SGR’s planetary gear reducers and speed increasers have been successfully exported to 31 countries—including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Vietnam. Spanning regions across Europe, South America, North America, Australia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, these products find widespread application across diverse industrial sectors, such as energy, papermaking, metallurgy, port operations, and industrial automation.

Besides,SGR’s worm gear reducers also have distinct advantages. The key feature of SGR’s worm gear reducer is the multi-tooth meshing between the worm and worm wheel. The worm is made of 20CrMnTi steel, carburized, quenched, and then ground. The worm wheel is made of high-performance alloy bronze, ensuring long-term wear resistance, high transmission efficiency, and long service life.

Compared to cylindrical worm gear pairs of the same specifications, it significantly improves load-bearing capacity and transmission efficiency. It also possesses mechanical self-locking performance at high speed ratios, effectively enhancing mechanical safety. SGR has conducted systematic research with relevant universities on design, processes, production assembly, and testing methods, hoping to develop and promote this new transmission technology invented by the Chinese. The installation dimensions are interchangeable with those of a foreign company's CAVEX® Worm-Gear Units Type.Custom-made key transmission components are also available.

Moving forward, SGR will remain steadfast in upholding its corporate vision: "To be a pioneer in technological innovation within the field of mechanical transmission." By focusing on the R&D and innovation of its mechanical transmission product series, the company aims to empower global industrial upgrading and sustainable development.(Author,SGR, Angie Zhang)
